El Chicano
The name Óscar Zeta Acosta may not attract attention among the modern generation, much less among younger Chicanos. It may come as a What They Had surprise to many that the man known as The Brown Buffalo was once a dominant figure in the movement, playing a critical role as a defense attorney for East LA strike members and defying police brutality when he contended to be a sheriff. of the county of Los Angeles 1970.
Award-winning director Phillip Rodriguez (Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle) is helping to correct the amnesia of the story in his At War latest work The Rise and Fall of the Brown Buffalo, which details Acosta’s life, including his activism, his friendship with the renegade author Hunter S. Thompson and his mysterious disappearance in 1974 in Mazatlan, Mexico. Thompson characterized Acosta as a Samoan lawyer, Dr. Gonzo, in his novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Although Acosta has been portrayed before in the cinema, Rodríguez maintains that this film is a “first” because it is being told from an Spinning Man exclusively Latin lens without any type of money laundering.
