Over the Moon
Over the Moon sandra Oh’s role in the new animated film Over the Moon may not be her greatest, but it does hold deep meaning to her. The story takes place in China and Oh plays the voice of Fei Fei’s stepmother, a girl who mourns the death of her mother. So she builds a rocket to fly to the moon in search of the truth about a goddess who lives there.
The Golden Globe-winning actress says she was drawn to the role because Fei Fei was an intelligent and fearless female character in a complex family situation and a story that celebrates Asian culture. Over the Moon was written by her friend Audrey Wells, also a screenwriter for The Hate U Give (“The hate you give”) and Under the Tuscan Sun (“Under the Tuscan sun”). Wells had directed her in her 1999 debut, “Guinevere,” and Oh wanted to be part of her latest project. Wells died of cancer before the animated film was finished.
The musical film, which premieres Friday on Netflix, features an all-Asian voice cast that includes Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong and newcomer Cathy Ang.
