The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden The novel “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published in 1911, has endured for more than a century. The Secret Garden full It remains one of the great classics of children’s literature, a book that skilfully combines childhood dreams and nightmares. Its balance of light and dark, death and rebirth remains powerfully moving in its rare harmony.
The Mark Mundan adaptation, which premieres on Friday in video-on-demand (on demand) by STX Films, fails to fully delve into its characters. At times it is slow and too far from this vibrant story. But it stays in tune with the spirit of Burnett’s book, and by the time it reaches its late crescendo it manages to flourish.
“The Secret Garden” has been adapted many times, but only once as a blockbuster film, in 1993. Agnieszka Holland’s version, a highly accomplished family film, is a classic in its own right. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola, with photography by Roger Deakins and Maggie Smith as housekeeper, Holland’s “The Secret Garden” (currently available streaming on HBO Max) is hard to beat.
